Narrative Therapy

2nd Edition

In 2011 the American Psychological Association (APA) released Stephen Madigan’s book Narrative Therapy. This amazing little 'book that could' reached a massive international audience and went on to become a 'best seller'. The book is now accompanied by a six session video by an eight person film team of Stephen's live therapy work.

In 2019 the APA published the Second Edition of Narrative Therapy. This new text richly explores the amazing world wide renaissance in narrative therapy and guides the reader towards the most contemporary and exciting new practice developments that are shaping the future of our practice.

Michael White and Stephen Madigan, 1992

In this Second Edition, Stephen Madigan does a superb job of “remembering the future” of narrative therapy by drawing on the rich traditions of its past and taking us to the multiple developments of the present.  He catches Michael White’s voracious appetite for learning new ideas and sweeps us up into whirlwind of iterations of narrative—true to the original innovative thinking.  Both those new to the narrative approach as well as longtime theoreticians and practitioners will delight in this explication.

Narrative Therapy Informed Relational Interviewing with Conflicted Couple Relationships

Stephen first invented narrative therapy informed Relational Interviewing to offer an alternative, non-individualist, and common sense relational response for conflicted relationships being brought to Couple Therapy. VSNT philosopher Todd May has been instrumental in introducing/furthering a wide variety of new the theoretical ideas to the practice understandings of Relational Interviewing. Working together Stephen and Todd show the consistent link and coherency between their non-individualist theories with the non-individualist practice.  Stephen demonstrates a wide variety of video taped sessions with conflicted couple relationships he's worked with in Canada, Norway and the USA. Questions: narrativevancouver@gmail.com or you can register here on the site.

Book Review: Narrative Therapy 2nd Edition

Stephen Madigan has done a brilliant job of conveying narrative therapy in a manner that is accessible while maintaining the richness and complexity of the concepts and practices. He seamlessly connects the theories that inform narrative therapy and the interventions the flow from those ideas.  Dr. Madigan is to be admired for his commitment and passion for circulating narrative practices to the larger therapy community.  Bravo!

David Nylund, MSW, PhD, Professor of Social Work, Sacramento State University and Director Gender Health Centre.
