“The stories of survivors experiencing gender violence are not the stories of brokenness; their stories represent living archives of resistance, dignity, and wisdom waiting to be acknowledged."

"When I started thinking about responding to trauma differently, it was because of this common experience I had of hearing the most powerful stories in my office of how people had resisted and pushed back against the effects of the trauma, how they were getting bits and pieces of their life back despite the suffering, and all the hard-won knowledge they had gained. I kept asking myself - why was I the only one hearing and benefiting from these stories? I didn't want their stories to die in my office so - I started inviting the people consulting me to start writing letters to each other"

~ Julia Gerlitz - VSNT Faculty

“The children we meet in therapy are no different from the young heroes they seek out in favourite storybooks and darkened theatres in their capacities to apply themselves at critical moments and exceed expectations. Like their fictional counterparts, they may be reluctant at first. But we can lend a hand by calling children forward at their best rather than making them out as inadequate to the task and turning to surrogates to take their place"

~ David Marsten - VSNT Faculty
